Lauren’s tips for the holiday reading pack

Here are some things that my schools are busy doing. I hope this helps you prepare your packs too.

Teachers are using the Sounds Grid on the Online Assessment to check for any sounds their children need to practise. This helps them decide the resources to send home:

  • The right Virtual Classroom films for sounds and word practice. They’re encouraging parents and carers to watch these films with their children for five to 10 minutes each day.

  • Storybooks that children can already read: RWI Storybooks, Book Bag Books – or both. They say it’s easy to assign Read Write Inc. books on the eBook Library Subscription from OUP. (There are some super home quizzes on there too.)

  • My Set 2 and 3 Speed Sounds books. They’ve even got instructions on the inside cover – and only cost £1 per child.

They’re also planning to send home the parent and carer letter. This sums up what they can do over the break – nicely and simply. You’ll find this on the Online Subscription in the Spotlight on the 2024 PSC module.

Some children don’t have the opportunity to read at home. To help these children, they are running Virtual Classroom clubs before or after school alongside normal lessons and practice sessions.
