Becoming a trainer
Essential
Trainers must be able to:
- engage and motivate children to read
- demonstrate significant knowledge of systematic, synthetic phonics
- demonstrate knowledge of children’s literature
- engage and motivate teachers and leaders
- communicate clearly – orally and in writing
- work co-operatively with colleagues
- receive coaching willingly to improve their teaching and training
- practise teaching and training
- plan and prioritise work effectively.
Trainers must have:
- Qualified Teacher Status
- a full and valid driving licence (with 6 or fewer penalty points)
- a valid right to work document (e.g Passport).
Desirable
Trainers will:
- have been a successful reading leader in a school using Read Write Inc. Phonics
- have evidence of their children gaining over 90% Phonics screening results using Read Write Inc. Phonics.
Trainers are provided with comprehensive training before they work in schools.
Trainers learn how to:
- work without the need of supervision
- teach any child to read regardless of age, background or need
- provide a high standard of training, keeping up with the latest online training
- make the best use of practice and coaching to improve their teaching and tutoring
- support schools on Development days and progress meetings, using the online portal
- galvanise leaders and staff to focus on their lowest 20% readers, challenging them to keep up all pupils from the very beginning
- keep leaders buoyant and help them find solutions to overcome organisational barriers
- prepare diligently before a school visit using the school’s half-termly data and provide leaders with clear next steps
- respond clearly and quickly to emails internally and externally
- support their schools to ensure 90+% children meet the requirements of the Phonics Screening Check in Year 1 and 100% in Y2.
Trainers are offered part time or full-time, annualised day, term time contracts.
They are paid generously, including a pension package, healthcare and a company laptop and phone.
Leave is commensurate with school holidays
Candidates:
- complete an application and enclose a CV and letter by the deadline on the advert
- provide a five-minute film* of themselves teaching a phonics lesson to a reception or Year 1 group and email this to recruitment@ruthmiskin.com
*Note for filming: keep the children out of shot or unidentifiable unless you have permission slips for filming. Alternatively, you can film it without children present.
Interview day
Successful candidates are invited for a remote interview.
The Operations team will explain the commitments necessary to become a trainer and the contracts on offer. Candidates are urged to ask questions to ensure they are still keen to be interviewed.
Candidates are interviewed by RMT leaders.
