About Phonics for Nursery
In a nutshell
Read Write Inc. Phonics for Nursery is for children in their last term of Nursery. It supports pre-school children’s literacy progress, including developing their language through storytimes and teaching phonics.
It provides the Nursery team with the tools they need to ensure every child learns to read confidently, right from the start.
The programme is published by Oxford University Press.

“Our children love joining in with Fred Games – helping them blend sounds into words orally. Children learn the names of the pictures and the letter-sounds in the summer term. They go on to make such a strong start in Reception.”
Assistant Headteacher and EYFS Lead, Shoreditch Park Primary School, Hackney
How does it give Nursery children a head start with reading?
- Read Write Inc. Phonics for Nursery is designed specifically for nurseries and pre-school to encourage a love of reading from an early age.
- Children enjoy learning new sounds each day and reviewing previous sounds and words.
- Engaging activities help children understand that words are made up of sounds. Once they can read letters and blend sounds into words they read matched sound-blending books.
- Children grow their vocabulary through nursery rhymes, poems, songs and planned talk. And we show you how.
- Storytimes are the best they can be so children love and talk about the stories they hear. Our training films help you every step of the way.
- Parents and carers are involved from the start with our send-home Virtual Classroom films.
Online training films
