Flying start in september
Let’s get them flying!
Regional Training
- Make a strong start in September – This one-day training gives the Reception team the tools to hit the ground running in September.
- Read Write Inc. Phonics – this two-day training ensures everyone is teaching the programme with confidence and consistency.
- Build an expert team – this one-day leadership training supports Reading Leaders and headteachers to build an expert reading team.
Top priorities to get them flying from day one…
….in Reception
- Establish RWI routines so children settle into school life quickly. You can then get straight to the teaching.
- Tutor from the start for quick keep up and longer-term support for SEND.
- Make friends with Fred so children enjoy phonics from the start. If you have a Training Package, children have fun learning to blend with our Fred Games on the Virtual Classroom.
- Organise a meeting with families to explain how their children will learn to read. Find meeting powerpoints and films on the School Portal.
….in Year 1
- Start with what they know. Remember that ‘review’ is built into every lesson which means that you can use Reception Summer 2 assessment data to inform their starting place.
- Protect time for daily tutoring from the start of the term. Every day counts!
- Show families how they can help at home. Our animated Set 2 and 3 films on the Online Subscription are perfect for extra practice.
….in Year 2
- Focus on fluency. Reading to the last Grey Storybook helps children build their stamina before they leave the security of decodable books. See how children love reading the later Storybooks.
- Plan for reading beyond Read Write Inc. Phonics. We have support for literacy lessons, storytime and book club to build fluency, stamina and joy!
- More Storybooks from Oxford University Press help provide the practice needed to build fluency.
