English lessons

We recommend…

Use Read Write Inc. Comprehension to develop your children’s talk, vocabulary, grammar, spelling and composition. Your children already know RWI routines so you can focus on stimulating activities that develop their understanding of absorbing stories and non-fiction texts.

If you have a RWI Phonics subscription, you already have online training available to you. Or you can join us for face-to-face training to get the most out of the programme.

For pupils who can decode well, effective teaching supports pupils to develop as readers through:

  • introducing a wide range of literature and non-fiction that they could not or might not choose to read independently
  • explanations, modelling and support from the teacher for different aspects of reading, including fluency
  • allowing pupils to think deeply and discuss a range of rich and challenging texts.

Reading Framework: Reading in English lessons, pages 107 to 115

Weekly book club

We recommend…

Use our curated list of accessible page turners to encourage children to put in their reading miles.

Pupils must be offered a feast of books: easy reads, books about how things work, graphic novels, joke books, irreverent books, books about animals – anything that might hook them into reading.

Reading Framework: Book club, pages 91 to 97

Storytime

We recommend…

Start with this film – we hope it inspires you to keep reading aloud to your children every day.

This practical guide will bring out the storyteller in you!

Reading aloud fosters positive attitudes, enhances pupils’ motivation to read, and develops vocabulary and other knowledge, including of books, authors and genres that they might not choose to read for themselves

Reading Framework: Reading aloud to children in storytimes, page 101
