1. About Comprehension

Who is it for?

Read Write Inc. Comprehension is for children in Year 2 who have just completed Read Write Inc. Phonics. Children completing the Phonic programme in Years 3 and 4 will also benefit from this programme.

The programme is taught by a teacher for one hour a day.

Content

It comprises 20 modules. Each module has two texts.

The teacher introduces the first text by posing The Big Question – the key to comprehending the story. Children learn the meanings of potentially unfamiliar words, answer Quick Check questions, discuss the story, and compose written responses.

Children then read the second text. This shares a common theme with the story but is much shorter. It is used as a jumping off point to develop children’s vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and composition.

Direct teaching

Teachers engage children and ensure their full participation by using partner work. Partners answer every question together. This keeps children working and thinking throughout the lesson and gives teachers opportunities to check if something needs explaining more clearly.

Teachers who have taught Read Write Inc. Phonics will be familiar with the routines and behaviours necessary for each activity.

Time required for teaching

Each module takes one to two weeks, depending on how much time is given to the writing activities. It can be used flexibly alongside other reading programmes.

Entry assessment

Children must be able to read the Set 7 Grey Storybooks comfortably to enter the programme.

Children who have not been taught to read using Read Write Inc. Phonics, will need to read the entry assessment in the Comprehension Handbook to check they have the necessary decoding ability.
