Government to stop grading quality of teaching

Ofsted will stop grading the ‘quality of teaching’ in schools in order to prevent teachers thinking they must use certain teaching styles to impress inspectors.

  • Ofsted currently uses four categories: leadership and management; behaviour and safety; quality of teaching, learning and assessment and outcomes for pupils.
  • Ofsted will continue to report on the ‘impact’ of teaching through the remaining three categories, but will no longer publish a separate grade for quality of teaching.

The announcement was made in the government’s new schools White Paper.
