Inequality in school attainment is higher than 3 decades ago, new research suggests

Research by Social Market Foundation (SMF) reveals that regional disparities in education exist and are stronger than ever. Geographical area is becoming a more predictive factor of performance in school.

  • North East, Yorkshire and Humber, West Midlands and East Midlands have persistently underperformed
  • 70 per cent of pupils in London achieve five good GCSE’s compared to 63 per cent in Yorkshire and Humber

Nick Clegg is set to launch an independent, cross-party initiative to examine causes and effects of inequality in education across primary and secondary levels in England and Wales.
