North-south divide exists amongst deprived preschoolers, new report says

Less than half of children from the poorest families in the north of England reach a good standard of development by 5, lagging far behind comparable children in the south.

  • 47% of the poorest children in the north reach expected level of development before school, compared to 59% amongst the poorest children in London.
  • Northern children are at a disadvantage even before school because families are affected by higher unemployment, low pay, weak productivity and underinvestment.
