Trials of the Early Years pupil premium will start in seven areas from January 2015 and nationwide from April 2015. Schools, nurseries and childminders will receive an extra £300 to help disadvantaged 3 and 4 year-olds catch up with their peers.
This follows extensive research showing that:
- Children from low-income families have already fallen behind by 5.
- The attainment gap in the early years impacts on later educational outcomes.
- High-quality early years teaching can make a significant difference.
The impact of this funding will depend on how well it is spent. Research will be posted on the EEF (Education Endowment Foundation) website.
Ofsted will also be checking that the funding is used effectively.
