About Ruth Miskin Training

Our avowed core purpose is to teach every child to read – and to keep them reading. We know that this changes everything; readers have access to new words, new worlds and new ideas. They build an extensive vocabulary and gain new knowledge everyday for themselves. Children who read a lot do well at school – whatever their background.

Our first programme, Read Write Inc. Phonics, is now the market leader in teaching children to read and is used by over a quarter of UK primary schools. It grew out of Ruth Miskin’s work as a headteacher in Tower Hamlets. She knew that in order for a school to be successful every headteacher needed to adopt a consistent whole-school approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling.

Fidelity to the teaching programme, rigorous assessment, tracking and tutoring ensure that schools can guarantee progress for every child.

About our programmes

Ruth Miskin has created four Read Write Inc. programmes, all published by Oxford University Press:

Ruth Miskin Training provides a complete literacy training package that meets the challenge of the new National Curriculum, including grammar and handwriting plus the full training necessary to implement the core Read Write Inc. programmes.

All of our trainings are available either in-school for the whole staff group or at central locations for individual staff members, smaller staff groups and independent members of the public.

About the team

Over the last 12 years Ruth Miskin has built a team of outstanding trainers and senior leaders who train all staff and then provide intensive ongoing, in-school support, across the UK. know how to build a cohesive and enthusiastic team of teachers and assistants. They use the same explicit teaching techniques and strategies in their training that you as teachers will go on to use with your children. They model lessons, coach teachers and work one-to-one with challenging children – giving you all the support you need to make sure things move quickly after the training.

Our team of training coordinators, developers and operations staff are based at our head office in London.

About Ruth Miskin

Ruth Miskin

Ruth Miskin is one of the UK’s leading authorities on teaching children to read. She has many years experience as a head teacher, teacher trainer and consultant in phonics and literacy, working with primary and secondary schools throughout the UK.

Her time as a headteacher in Tower Hamlets convinced her that when headteachers put reading at the heart of their schools they change everything. Their children learn to read quickly, get the reading habit early, learn to love reading and are successful at school. These heads ensure that every teacher becomes an expert in the teaching of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Ruth’s programmes provide high-quality innovative resources and, even more importantly, provide the training necessary for every teacher and teaching assistant to teach literacy effectively and enthusiastically. Read Write Inc. Phonics has now been adopted in around 5,000 schools across the UK and worldwide. Oxford University Press published her comprehensive Literacy and Language programme for 6-11 year olds in May 2013.

Ruth has been an adviser to the Government on many aspects of literacy teaching since 1997, from the early stages of the National Literacy Strategy to the Rose Review into the teaching of reading, the National Curriculum Review Committee and Lord Bew’s SATs Review Committee. Ruth was awarded an OBE for services to Education in 2011.

Her work has been featured both by Newsnight on BBC1 and Dispatches on Channel 4.
